What’s in a name? Helen Armstrong and Peach Melba

In The Mercury – 23 February 1887, it was announced that Mrs Helen Armstrong (nee Helen Porter Mitchell) was to change her name.  In honour of her home town of Melbourne, her stage name became Nellie Melba.

OUR MELBOURNE LADIES’ LETTER

Mrs Armstiong, one of our best Australian singers now in Paris, has met with the highest appreciation in musical circles in that city. We are a little bit sorry that she should take a professional name; we would rather have her retain the one we have always known her by. The new name in Madame Nellie Melba.

Peach Armstrong doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as Peach Melba does it?
